The Kitty Cottage

In 2007 we were able to build the Kitty Cottage.
It works well for both feral and domestic cats and the shelter can accommodate 8-10 cats.

      Dimensions: 2 feet deep, 4 feet long, 2 - 2 1/2 feet tall.
Most of the wood and materials were scrap and/or donated by friends.
I used 2x4's for the walls and treated 2x6's for the base because it sits on the ground.
I also insulated the walls.
Both the lower floor and the loft are carpeted.

As a Flea-deterrent, I put  cedar on walls and under the carpeting.
I also put a few drops of eucalyptus oil in the corners every few months.
The roof lifts up and loft lifts out for easy cleaning.

The cottage even  has a heat source. A 40-Watt porch lamp inside the shelter helps keep cats warm.
A small window in front lets in natural light, and allows us to see when bulb has burned out.
Temperature have been 0° F/-17°C outside with a wind chill of -15°F/-26°C, it was 40°F/4°C inside by the door.
